Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal

Here are the premises of the second oldest university in Europe! This is the heart of educational history! I was very excited to walk in that area, imaging that centuries ago, there were students wandering the same streets to get one of the best education in Europe. Being in academia for many years, I felt so jealous that I am not a part of this well-established scientific culture.

By the way, the famous library where some scenes of Happy Porter were shot is located here as well. Unfortunately, it was not allowed to take pictures there… 😞

I had a chance to talk with a security guy, who is lucky to work in one of the most famous libraries in the world. He told me that all the books on the shelfs were original ones; moreover, the library still has its direct function partially. This means that you can order a book, which is stored there! 😍

Downstairs, in the basement, there is a… prison! I was more than surprised to find it out… Like the library stuff explained to me, the students who thought differently, ‘against the rulers’ were placed there to elaborate on their ideas and change their opinion to the mainstream. In some cases, the students were kept in those tiny rooms so long that they went crazy and were not able to function normally…

How many stories, sad and happy, scary and enlightening, are kept in those walls?

Fascinating!

  1. We live and learn, boom boom! Now I’m tempted to fish out our HP movies and watch ’em again, knowing what we now know—but tonight’s relaxation is the BFG … love it!
