My today’s post differs from the previous ones. I decided to write about… how people eat a kiwi in two neighbour countries: Finland and Russia. I know the whole idea sounds ridiculous because how different it actually can be? But with Finnish friends we discussed this a lot, and it turned out that we do have different approaches to kiwis. 😄
I happy to introduce both ways:
1. I start from the one I grew up with. In Russia, we basically peel a kiwi like a potato. When it’s done, we cut it to small pieces and eat it. Some people just go with biting, but it is not considered a good manner.
2. Here is the Finnish way! ☺ The kiwi is cut in two pieces, then you eat it with a spoon.
The second way is less energy consuming I should admit!
Which way do you eat Kiwi? Is there any other option? ☺😉
ooh yes I have a third way for you! Similar to your second but instead of a hard boiled egg, I eat mine like a soft-boiled egg – cut the top of and then dig in with a spoon!

I know lots of English people who eat it this way, but not sure it is a local habit as I know some who peel it too.
I wonder what the Kiwi’s do in NZ?!

I also learned to eat it like a boiled egg – cut off the top and use a spoon. But if I have a kiwi on top of my breakfast I will peel it and cut it into small pieces.

Like Becky B my children ate Kiwi like an egg. Cutting off the top with a knife. I too eat it that way unless some kind Russian has peeled one! Thanks for sharing this! X

Peel and cut into pieces with Greek yogurt and Chia seed as a dessert or in a nice salad, cause we shouldn’t eat fruit by itself.

In New Zealand … some cut it in half lengthwise, and spoon it out. Some slice it up, or into wedges.
What many don’t know is that in the earlier days the ‘kiwi fruit’ was called the Chinese Gooseberry and was hairy. Really hairy, covered all over in fur (yes, true~!). One had to cut and spoon, but I liked shocking people by eating mine like an apple, complete with fur. It was a habit I never grew out of, so even now when the lovely things are hairless I still find it convenient to just pick ’em up and munch. But be warned, at one end is the little hard lump of stalk that challenges the teeth … and most folks these days cut ’em in half across the short axis centre, and spoon them out—again that hard bit gets in the way a little 🙂 🙂

I’m getting a bit thin on top … oh, yes. No, they are all bald(ish) now. The hair was bred out of them and they were selectively bred to be much larger. Really there’s no right or wrong way—simply whatever suits personally.
We take issue with Australia over two main topics:
Pavlova cake, and
Phar Lap.
Leaving the horse (our NZ horse …) out of it; Pavlova is a confection/dessert invented by New Zealanders and named after a Russian ballerina. It involves meringue and kiwifruit. But Australians claim it was invented by them … all good fun. I have nothing against Australians—they are almost the same as people …

I have never heard about hairy kiwifruits, I crave to see it, must be amusing 🙂
Here in Poland we use both your Russian way and that you called Finnish.

As a commenter wrote, there are no hairy kiwis any more 😯 there are a lot of variation in eating, basically it depends on creativity. I am sure there are people who came up with some exotic way of eating kiwis 😀

I think I remember those hairy kiwi fruits from the 90’s – not very hairy, like bearded, it was rather very short 🙂

I cut the peel off and then cut up into quarters and half them, and throw them into my fruit salad! Then eat later. They are sooo delicious!
